This is a water powered back-up sump pump. It eliminates some risks that a battery powered pump has, plus you don't need to replace batteries every several years. It runs off of your city water supply, and draws one gallon of water from your supply for every two it pulls out of your sump, then dumps all three outside of your house.

1. Water Powered Versus Battery Powered: Everything, including the sump float, is water powered, so as long as you have water pressure, this unit will work. In contrast, a battery backup will fail if you forget to test/replace your battery every several years, or if the power is out during a long enough storm to use up your battery (from what I read, 18-24 hours of hard rain will do it). So the bottom line is that it's pretty unlikely that a battery backup will fail, but this unit eliminates those risks. (And exposes you to a new risk - that if you lose your main sump pump AND water pressure, you're out of luck).

2. Installation:... Read more

Our basement sump basin gets a fair amount of water during heavy rain. During Hurricane Irene, the basin filled up every few minutes-- even a day or two after the storm had passed. While the traditional electric pump was able to keep up with the incoming water, I feared what would happen if we lost power. Luckily, the power stayed on. Otherwise, we would have spent a couple of sleepless nights manually bailing water.

Not wanting to go through this again, I decided to get a backup sump pump. I researched battery backup pumps, but was a bit worried about maintaining and periodically replacing the battery. I heard a few too many stories of batteries failing just when they were needed.

As such, a water-powered sump pump seemed an ideal solution: A completely independent power source (municipal water), and zero maintenance or other wear items. Though it's certainly possible to lose municipal water pressure, I've yet to ever encounter it. I researched a few... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Peace of mind, August 14, 2012

After spending more than one night bailing water out of a sump pit by hand when power was out, I decided to get a backup pump. The concept of a water-driven pump is appealing since the likelihood of losing water pressure in the city is extremely low. I found the installation to be straightforward and was able to complete it in an evening with the help of a friend.

We haven't had a situation where the pump had to kick in yet, but it worked well enough during testing. It definitely drains more slowly than my primary pump, but it's faster than if we were bailing water by hand and carrying it to the floor drain across the basement.

Overall I'm satisfied with the pump, but it seems somewhat overpriced for the way that it works. Maybe this just means that the explanations I've found about it working by creating a vacuum and sucking water out of your pit like a giant straw make it sound too simple. :)
